[Amazon results] Online sales down and US$3bn losses in 2022… How does Amazon stay afloat?

As predicted by the 18,000 layoffs announced last month, Amazon's growth slowed in 2022. While turnover grew by 13% year-on-year, online sales continued to decline and the group's operating profit fell by 50% in 2022.

On 2 February 2023, Amazon published unaudited results, showing falling profitability and slowing growth. Net sales reached US$513.98 billion in 2022, compared to US$469.82 billion in 2021. This represents growth of 13% at constant exchange rates, almost 10% below the 2021 figure at +22%.…
