Service Containers: Monop’s and Tegut run pilots

Food retailers (Auchan, Carrefour, Co-op Sweden) are all running similar tests. Monop’ (104 stores) is the latest to launch an automatic supermarket via a ‘Black Box’ formula, tested by staff at company headquarters. The concept revolves around an 18 sq.m. large steel container holding 300 products for catering and non-food.

Access is via credit card or telephone (Google and ApplePay). The average customer visit takes less than a minute, with a typical basket of €10. In Germany, the Tegut supermarkets (275 stores, owned by Migros Group) is testing a prototype over 40 sq.m. with staff. A deployment is planned to for 10 contactless stores without humans by the autumn.
