UK. Supermarkets give staff a helping hand amid rising inflation
Shopping vouchers, free meals and even a second pay rise in the same year – a host of measures have been announced in the UK retail sector to support staff amid rising prices. Such measures also serve to make employment in the sector more attractive, as it grapples with staff shortages.
On 22 September, Lidl announced its second pay rise of the year. From October, more than 23,000 employees of the supermarket group will receive €12.50 per hour, compared to €11.58 previously. This change will make Lidl the “best paying” supermarket in the country, but how long will it hold onto this title? In recent weeks, many supermarkets have also decided to raise wages again to counter the impact of inflation.
